Review of free malware protection::What Is Malware Defense
With all the focus on infected computers lately, many people are just randomly picking a virus program thinking it will work just fine. Before going out and buying virus protection software, do some research first. Some of those programs don't catch all the viruses, while others are a bit more than you may need. Yet there are even other virus protection programs that do nothing more than detect and remove the viruses you don't want on your computer. Once you have done your research you will find that you are buying something that has proven itself in the marketplace and the computer field for sometime. An excellent virus protection program will keep your computer running well for a long time. Having been a computer tech for many years, I have used a variety of virus programs out there and have chosen poorly at times on a program to protect my computer. When I started using one, my first choice was McAfee Virus Protection. A few years after that I was using their premium package until they did away with certain features. McAfee Virus protection is decent, but you can still get a virus on your computer as it doesn't scan all email types. For the most part, McAfee Virus protection is good enough for a person who just checks email and does research online, and mostly does their work directly on the computer without getting online too often. Norton Antivirus 2007 is one of the top rated virus protection programs on the internet. It may bog your computer down a little if your ram is 512 kb or less, but other than that it does the job it is supposed to do. You still have Live Update with it so it will keep your program current. I recommend using it once a week as there are one to three viruses that come out weekly if not more frequently. If you do have 512 kb of ram or less, then close anything you are not using in your taskbar and do not have too many windows open as this will also contribute to slowing down your computer's speed. The Norton Internet package is also good as it supposedly has a spyware detection part to it. This software states that it protects against adware and malware as well as other encrypting programs searching for your information on your computer, but I would recommend trying it out first. Norton's Internet package and Antivirus 2007 are mainly designed for Windows XP Home and Pro. Do you have a Vista program? Vista's options are only two that I know of so far. These are Norton 360 and Kaspersky. Of the two, the only one that really works well is Norton 360, but it is not 100% perfect. There are some quirks with it, and of course it is because Vista is still rather new and Microsoft is dilligently trying to update it for all the software bugs. Many of the new antivirus programs that say they work with Vista do not do so well. Norton 360 will install well with Vista, but you will have to update the software once you get online. Kaspersky has come a long way from when it originally came out as a spyware removal tool. It is now rated as the #1 Bestseller among firewalls and virus, spyware, adware, malware, etc. protection, an all in one package. Be warned that it does need quite a bit of ram to it. I would not recommend this software if you have 256 mb of ram or less on your computer. 512 MB of ram is also rather borderline for this software. There is a version for everything before Vista, but this is the only other virus protection I know of that will perform well with Vista. Panda is another good virus protection product, but there is a particular way that is best to install it. Make sure you are able to connect to the internet before you install Panda's software. In addition, have your Vista firewall turned on just in case there happens to be a virus waiting to infect your computer from the internet. While you are installing Panda, you will need to update it on the internet so that it will work with Vista. If you still have an XP version of Windows software, you may still need to do this. Panda still has issues with Vista, but it would fall third in line behind Norton 360 and Antivirus 2007. One software I would like to mention, as it is an excellent compliment to Norton Antivirus 2007, is Webroot's SpySweeper. SpySweeper normally will cost at retail price around $29.99. You don't need their Washer or other programs unless you just want to spend that extra money and have a lot of time to waste with them. Focus on protecting your computer from the viruses and other items as well. The reason I recommend SpySweeper is because it will catch what Norton Antivirus 2007 will not, and vice versa. I have been using them for four years now and have not had any problems with my computer system at all. The major things to focus on when protecting your computer are making sure that you have a firewall and there is some sort of program(s) to protect your computer from viruses, spyware, adware, malware, etc. These issues should be what you want to address when taking caution on the internet as they are serious issues to the proper running our your computer as a safeguard. Of course, we all wonder why there are people out there causing such havoc on the internet. We may never know, but as an end user you will need to do something about it. Some of the other software out there you can try out are The Shield Deluxe, CA (which I do not recommend), BitDefender, NOD 32, and TrendMicro which makes PCillin. PCillin is more for computer techs to use, but I have been surprised at the number of novice computer users who use it. PCillin works well with Linux as the operating system on a computer, and I have seen it on some Apple computers as well. The reason I do not recommend CA is because it sometimes removes items from your computer's registry when it removes viruses. I had it on a computer I was rebuilding, and had to reinstall it only to find out it took out the NTLDR file that was required to start up the computer. Therefore, be cautious when using it. If you don't like it mail it back to the company for a refund since you cannot get a refund on open software at a retail store. You can try many of these softwares out for free for 30 days by going to their website, and downloading it to your computer. This may be the best way to find out before purchasing to see which software works best with your computer. While you are test driving those various software, and make notes about what you like most about them and what you like least. Time your computer's startup time to find out how long it takes for your computer to boot up to its operating system. That may be the one thing that sells you on the software. Then you may want to time how long it takes for you to connect to the internet once you click on your browser's icon. Be a smart shopper for your computer's sake when it comes to protecting it from viruses, and you will have less headaches later on down the line. |

Review of free norton::How do I get 100% safety on my Norton AntiVirus - Ask ...
If you have a computer that connects to the Internet, you need to protect it against things like viruses, spyware and other malicious programs that could infect your system. If you don't want to have to pay for this protection for whatever reason, or if you just want to try out some programs for your computer before buying, your not alone. I would not want to have to pay for some of the programs I have seen on the Internet that some companies have put out. Some can be down right frustrating to use and are so confusing that the common home user would be lost trying to use it, much less computer technicians like those at companies who specialize in trying out software for our benefit. I have looked at the current crop of anti virus software and protection and give you some help whether it's free anti-virus or trial versions for you to try out and see if you want to spend your money on the programs. I am doing this because I have kids in 4-H and they just bought a laptop, it's used but has the latest of everything, even Norton Anti-virus, but only the trial version. But they don't want to have to spend the money on software when they won't be going on the Internet much and when they do it will probably be at my home or at the local 4-H office on their system. I do want the computer protected though. And I'll start out with some of the free anti-virus protections available over the Internet. With any anti-virus protection there are two important parts to them, updates and removal. If the program does not get updated regularly against the most current viruses then it is no good against those viruses. And if you can't remove the viruses the program only tells you that you are infected and you'll have to go elsewhere to get rid of it. AntiVir Personal Edition Classic is a free program available here: http://www.free-av.com/ They have free anti-virus for windows and Linux, Free BSD, Open BSD and Solaris. This is nice for those that have those other operating systems. The programs are free and they have download sites where you download the installer for the program and then the program will download and install on your computer. This works fine if you are already protected with the anti-virus or have a firewall like windows on. If you do not have protection you should not go on to the Internet without at least your firewall for windows on. They have the usual updates for their program which is what anti-virus is all about. AVG Anti-Virus is another free program available here: http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10342876.html?tag=lst-6-2 It is from GriSoft and is another free program available over the Internet, this one is recommended by many sites and especially CNET. They give it a 4 out of 5 rating and users on their sites have rated it 4.5 out of 5. The program offers anti-virus protection with scheduled scanning and rescue disc creation for MSDOS scanning to get rid of infections at that level if Windows won't work on you. The interface is easy to use but pretty bland. This is the one that I am going to use on our new addition to the 4-H Tech Team and will see how well it works over time. It is very easy to install and setup, it took me about fifteen minutes to load and set up the program, with about a half hour to run the anti virus in between that set up time. It runs the anti-virus to make sure it starts out with a clean installation. It is easy to set up and use. A plain interface with buttons to the different areas such as virus scan, rescue disk creation and task scheduler. The disk creation is a part that I do not use on my other PC's, it is used if you do get a virus and need the computer information that gets infected. It creates a copy of your system files for the program to use in case of infection to use for a new install of those files. The other program I use called PC-cillin does not use this, it goes about the process in another way. These two are the only free anti virus programs that I found on the Internet that I would recommend. There are others but I have only recommended a couple that are rated as good ones to use. If you go to Download.com and go to the anti-virus section here: http://www.download.com/Antivirus/3150-2239_4-0.html?tag=nav_dir You can find some other free programs using the buttons at the top under rating to sort the ones by CNET or user ratings and the buttons at the bottom under license to choose the free programs. At the same place you can find trial versions of others, just keep the license at all or free to try and you can read about the other programs available for you to try. One that is highly recommended on many sites and by a lot of computer sources such as PC World is Trend Micro. They have three free programs that are great for your computer. They have two programs called CWshredder and Spyware Scanner that are utilities for cleanup and spyware removal, you can read about them at their website. The cw shredder is a cool web Trojan remover that removes unwanted cool web bugs on your computer, and Spyware Scanner is just that, a scanner and removal tool for spyware. The third program is Housecall, a free virus scan that will scan your computer and tell you if you are infected with a virus. If you are infected it will try to remove the virus but you may have to go elsewhere to get it removed. Here is a site to try for removal of viruses for free: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_cleaner.html Avast has a free virus and worm removal tool that works very well, especially as it's free. I have not used it on my own computer but did on the new one and it works very well and is easy. The big problem with infected files from worms or viruses is that they may change system files and make your system not work, or will get errors or strange things will happen. The Avast recovers the infected files and removes the worm or virus and you may need to restart your machine so the system can reload a system file or registry file that was possibly infected. It does work well and is easy. For anti-virus protection that you have to pay for, I would suggest using Trend Micro's PC-cillin Internet Security 2005. This is one program that is worth the cost, it has not only anti-virus but Internet firewall and spyware, adware and malware protection and removal. It is easy to use, configure and you can set it up to automatically scan, update and remove viruses. There are others but you can ask people what they use and find out from friends, relatives or coworkers what is good. The biggest thing I would recommend is a trial version to see if you like it. That way you can tell what it is you like and dislike and find out if you want to spend the money on it, or just go with a free program and save yourself. But the big point is to protect yourself and your computer against viruses and all the other stuff out there. |
