Anti-Virus Protection There are several anti-virus applications out there today. The main ones are Norton, MacAfee, AVG, and Avast. Now many people are probably asking, "What is the best Anti-Virus program to use?" I have used all of the above at one point or another. There are other Anti-Virus applications out there other than the ones mentioned here. They all work ok, but Avast is the one I trust the most out of all of them. Norton and MacAfee are both ok. In order to use them for more than 30 to 60 days you must purchase a subscription for these that usually cost around $30 to $50 a year depending on what you want out of the application. They are both memory hogs. Both of these also take a long time to run a full system scan. I used Norton to start with and my computer was running very slow. I scanned with it and it didn't pick up anything wrong even though I had a program that kept on coming up on me that I had never heard of. I searched the web for the name of the program and found out it was spyware. The program was called "Windows Antivirus 2009." When Norton didn't pick it up I then uninstalled it and tried the MacAfee anti-virus. It also didn't pick up anything even though I knew this spyware was on the computer. AVG was able to pick it up but not remove it. I then finally installed Avast. As soon as I installed it and go the updated virus definitions I disconnected from the internet and scanned the computer. Avast found the program along with many others that were spyware and viruses. When it finished it removed all of the infected files. The best part about it is that Avast is free!!! I can be browsing the internet and if Avast is detecting spyware or viruses on the web page I am navigating to it will alarm and ask me if I want to continue to the page that may have harmful material. This is an awesome feature for a free program. I would expect it when buying a subscription but I have never seen Norton or MacAfee do that when I was using them. Overall, I recommend for free Anti-Virus protection to use Avast. Since I have been using Avast I haven't had any infections on my computer. |
